Washington, 1 August 2024 (TDI): A two-hour rain delay proved to be no hindrance for Emma Raducanu, as she defeated American Peyton Stearns to advance to the Washington Open quarterfinals.
Raducanu, rated 51st in the world, defeated Stearns, 7-6 (8-6) 6-2. Raducanu declined to compete for Great Britain at the Olympics.
As Emma Raducanu hit to secure the opening set, a heavy downpour began. She won the set in a tiebreak after some waiting.
Raducanu stated, “Rainfall at such a significant point of the day is problematic today. It might have an impact on the game’s dynamics.”
She will play the victor of Paula Badosa, the wildcard, and Liudmila Samsonova, the third seed.
At the late-night game on Wednesday, Raducanu praised the audience for their patience.

Emma Raducanu stated, “I was aware that the match against Peyton would be difficult, particularly since Stearns would be playing at home. I believe I’m gaining some momentum after a successful run over the past few months.”
Reluctant to return to Roland Garros’ clay surface, the world number eighteen, who is still working through recovery after surgery on her wrist and ankle, declined an invitation to compete in the Olympics.
Rather, she is giving hard courts more importance than the upcoming US Open, which she qualified for and won in 2021.
