Egypt and Italy discuss GERD Development

Cairo, 13 September 2021 (TDI): Egypt and Italy have been engaging through the political round of consultations. The third round of talks was held in the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Office in Cairo which was based on several regional and international issues, bilateral relations, namely the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The meeting was chaired by the Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador Badr Abdel-Atti, and the Italian Director General of Political Affairs at the Italian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Pasquale Ferrara. During the meeting, the parties focused on bilateral political, commercial, and economic relations.

The requirement of the GERD is to fulfill the Egypt and Sudan water shortages. The consensus over the dam construction demands a legally binding agreement with Ethiopia to regulate cordial relations on water shortages. On the 156th ministerial session of the Arab League in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry urged the parties to show positive efforts towards an agreement that preserves Addis Ababa’s developmental goals without harming Khartoum and Cairo’s fundamental water rights.

Moreover, Ethiopian Minister Seleshi Bekele also announced the preparations for electricity generation using dams turbines.
