Roseau, 22 March 2024 (TDI): Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit lauded the enduring friendship between China and Dominica.
Moreover, he highlighted China’s consistent support during challenging times. Skerrit’s remarks came during an exclusive interview with Xinhua in Roseau, Dominica’s capital.
Dominica, nestled in the Eastern Caribbean’s Windward Islands, celebrates the 20th anniversary of robust diplomatic ties with China.
Furthermore, these relations are characterized by significant bilateral and multilateral growth. Skerrit emphasized Dominica’s unwavering commitment to the one-China principle. This principle exists as a cornerstone of their diplomatic relations.
Underpinning this relationship is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which Skerrit hailed as a catalyst for economic independence and social development.
Collaborative efforts under the BRI have enhanced agricultural technology, food security, and healthcare infrastructure in Dominica. This was notable with the establishment of the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital and advancements in medical care.
In addition to this, Skerrit highlighted the educational exchange between Dominica and China. Many Dominican students pursuing higher education in China returned to contribute to various sectors back home.
Skerrit praised China’s accomplishment in putting into place a system that accommodates its unique circumstances and reality while advancing China’s modernization and growth.
Every nation has the freedom to choose its political structure, as we have always stated. Additionally, he stated, “I think that China’s political system has also improved the standard of living for the Chinese people and contributed to China’s prosperity.”
According to Skerrit, several issues facing the modern world stem from a disregard for multilateralism, which he claimed is the path to global progress.
“And I think the way to go about achieving peace and prosperity is through dialogue and engagement between countries,” he added.
