Discussion on IT-related CPEC projects

Islamabad, 4 October 2021 (TDI): On Friday, the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives issued an order directing reverent officials to conclude action plans to support 4 mega-projects under CPEC in less than thirty days which includes the inception of China Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Science.

On this point, Asad Umar, the Federal Minister for PDSI administered meetings of lately formed Working Groups on Science and Technology and Information Technology Cooperation. The four projects that the minister led included the formation of the China Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Science, the installation of Oceanographic Research Vessel, and the creation of the Institute of Smart Semiconductor. He also established Silicon Solar Cells as well as a PV Panel Fabrication Facility capable of producing 500MW/annum. These projects were part of CPEC’s tenth JCC Meeting.

Shibli Faraz, Minister of Science & Technology, said that combined efforts of China and Pakistan should enable science and technology to be used to “accelerate the economy’s growth” and solve citizens’ problems. Faraz stated that Pakistan should develop a strategy, plan and monitor its progress to benefit from the Chinese technology and expertise.

Aminul Haq, the Federal Minister for Information Technology stated that in upcoming years, IT will be very beneficial for Pakistan. Furthermore, Pakistan had seen its software exports increased by almost 47% adding that Pakistan requires new programs for technical assistance to help meet the needs of Pakistan’s rapidly expanding IT industry.
