New York, 30 September 2021 (TDI): On Tuesday, Deputy UN Chief, Amina J Mohammad asked the Security Council to keep a sustained focus, partnership, and investments for the women of Somalia to boost their political participation.

During the meeting, under the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, UN Deputy Secretary-General highlighted unresolved issues of parliamentary quotas and their participation in elections with the objective of boosting women’s involvement in the political process.
She further added the second visit of her to Somalia was to put efforts to achieve sustainable peace, development, and more resilient and inclusive societies because she believes political participation of women is a game-changer.

She mentioned there was real concern that representation of women in the present election is going to decrease. She portrayed an array of roadblocks like rural tribal leaders – all of whom are men for female candidates in the election. Furthermore, Somali women financially struggle to support campaigns and challenges compound violence and discrimination, UN Deputy Secretary-General said. After her visit to Somalia, Women were more encouraged and energized to continue their participation in the issue, which has human rights and democratic origins.
