Jeddah, 5 August 2024 (TDI): In a significant development, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has convened an emergency meeting of its Executive Committee at the level of foreign ministers on August 7 in Jeddah.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar will attend the meeting alongside other OIC foreign ministers.

OIC said in a statement that the request from Iran and Palestine for an urgent meeting was accepted. The meeting will address the recent situation in the Gaza Strip and the broader Middle East peace process following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The agenda for the meeting includes discussions on the ongoing crimes by Israeli occupation troops against Palestinians and Israel’s aggression against the sovereignty of Iran.

The Executive Committee meeting will begin with remarks from the OIC Chair and Secretary General. Subsequent sessions will be conducted behind closed doors, involving members including Pakistan, Iran, Palestine, and other countries.

At the end of the meeting, a joint communiqué is likely to be adopted.

Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani recently spoke over phone with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Kani conveyed the deep distress of the Iranian nation and its leadership over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran during the Iranian President’s inauguration.

Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan shares these sentiments and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had strongly condemned both the events in Gaza and the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.

The situation in the Middle East is very tense after the assassination of Haniyeh. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has pledged “harsh punishment” for Israel.

Anticipating such a response, Israel’s military has said it was on “high alert.  The US has also decided to send warships and fighter squadron to Middle East to defend its ally Israel.
