Islamabad (TDI): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has confirmed the release of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan after he was detained by Israeli forces during an aid mission bound for Gaza.
Mushtaq Ahmad Khan was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy carrying aid to Gaza, when Israeli forces intercepted multiple vessels in international waters near Crete. According to organisers, 22 ships were stopped and more than 200 activists were taken into custody.
In a post on X, Ishaq Dar said Mushtaq Ahmad Khan had been “unlawfully detained” alongside other humanitarian workers but has now been released with the assistance of Greek authorities and support from Türkiye, where he was moved to Istanbul before returning to Pakistan.
Dar thanked the Foreign Office and Pakistan’s embassy in Athens for their efforts, while reiterating Islamabad’s condemnation of the interception and obstruction of humanitarian aid destined for Gaza. He said Pakistan continues to extend “unequivocal support” for the Palestinian people.
Confirming his release, Mushtaq Ahmad Khan said activists were “kidnapped” from international waters by Israeli forces and described the incident as a serious violation of international law. He urged global institutions to take notice and called for the immediate release of remaining detainees, including two members still in custody.
He said the mission would continue despite the incident, adding that humanitarian efforts to reach Gaza would not stop until the blockade ends and Palestinian rights are achieved.

Organisers of the flotilla alleged that detainees were subjected to harsh treatment, including limited access to food and water and prolonged confinement under difficult conditions. They described the situation as “calculated cruelty,” claims that could not be independently verified.

Despite the interceptions, organisers said several other vessels continue to sail toward Gaza, carrying medical supplies and food aid.
The incident has added further tension to an already volatile regional situation, with ongoing conflict and humanitarian concerns in Gaza drawing international attention.
