Havana (TDI): On the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cuba and the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to deepening political and economic cooperation with Azerbaijan.
The Ministry’s official statement emphasized the historical bonds of friendship that unite both countries and their people.
Cuba recognized Azerbaijan’s independence on December 26, 1991, while formal diplomatic ties were established on March 27, 1992.
Over the past three decades, both countries have gradually cultivated a strong partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to international cooperation.

A Snapshot of Cuba-Azerbaijan Relations
In 2008, thousands of tourists from Azerbaijan visited Cuba. The next year, in December, Cuba and Azerbaijan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the exchange of experience and undertaking joint activities in sport events and some other sectors.
Currently, cooperation in the field of mobile, communications, cyber security and internet service is under way between the two countries.
In the field of agriculture, Cuba and Azerbaijan cooperate in cattle breeding, tobacco fields, and tea cultivation.
During the fall of 2010, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Azerbaijan, Ali Abbasov, took the initiative to build a computer manufacturing plant in Cuba.
Later in October 2019, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited Azerbaijan to participate in the 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Baku, underscoring the high-level political and diplomatic dialogues between the two countries.

In recent years, high-level engagements have deepened the bilateral relationship. Notably, in February 2023, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev welcomed Cuban Vice-President Salvador Antonio Valdés Mesa in Baku.
During this meeting, both leaders highlighted the importance of strengthening ties in healthcare, tourism, education, agriculture, culture, and pharmaceuticals.
They also highlighted their collaboration in international organizations, particularly the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), where Azerbaijan’s chairmanship received commendation from the Cuban side.
Both countries have also demonstrated solidarity in international forums and events, supporting each other’s stance on key global concerns.
Top trade products between Cuba and Azerbaijan include alcoholic beverages, cigars, tobacco products, and rubber tires.
