CSTO Summit Addresses Regional Security, Nuclear Energy

Astana (TDI): The latest summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) brought together the leaders of its member states to deliberate on key regional and international security concerns.

Chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the meeting saw the participation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov.

In his opening remarks, President Tokayev underscored the CSTO’s vital role in ensuring peace and stability across Eurasia.

“In the face of modern challenges, the CSTO remains a crucial guarantor of security for all member states. Our collective actions, built on mutual trust and support, strengthen our ability to address complex and large-scale issues. The CSTO is more than a military alliance; it is a unique mechanism that unites our efforts and resources to protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Tokayev said.

Tokayev also reflected on the CSTO’s swift response during the 2022 unrest in Kazakhstan, which was sparked by rising gas prices and escalated into violent clashes, the Times of Central Asia reported.

Within 24 hours, CSTO forces were deployed to help stabilize the situation.

Russian troops secured key facilities in Almaty, while Kazakh forces restored order, demonstrating the CSTO’s operational capability in a critical moment.

In the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the opportunity to address ongoing tensions with Ukraine, revealing plans for the deployment of the “Oreshnik” medium-range ballistic missile system.

According to Putin, the Oreshnik possesses the destructive power of nuclear weapons and can penetrate heavily fortified targets.

“The temperature at the missile’s strike point reaches 4,000 degrees, disintegrating everything at the epicenter into elementary particles,” Putin explained.

He announced that serial production of the missile had begun and several units were ready for deployment.

Kazakhstan’s Nuclear Power Plans Highlighted in Summit

A significant topic of discussion was Kazakhstan’s ambition to build its first nuclear power plant.

President Tokayev proposed the formation of an international consortium for the project, with Russia expressing its willingness to participate through its state-owned nuclear company, Rosatom.

“Rosatom is ready to collaborate with specialists from other countries,” Putin noted, indicating the possibility of multilateral cooperation on the project.
