Consul General highlights CPEC role in women empowerment

Karachi, 8 March 2024 (TDI): The Consul General of China in Karachi, Yang Yundong, underscored the transformative impact of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiatives on women empowerment in Pakistan during a reception commemorating International Women’s Day.

Furthermore, the event, hosted by the Consulate General of China in Karachi, witnessed a gathering of prominent figures, including former federal minister, Barrister Shahida Jameel, female entrepreneurs, and representatives from various sectors.

Employment opportunities and promoting gender equality

Highlighting the significant strides made in enhancing cooperation between China and Pakistan. Consul General, Yang Yundong, emphasized the burgeoning employment opportunities for women in the wake of CPEC projects.

He cited the example of the Thar Coal Mine project, where over a hundred women have been trained as truck drivers, actively participating in the project’s construction and contributing to local development.

Consul General Yang Yundong reaffirmed the commitment of both China and Pakistan towards advancing women’s development.

He acknowledged the pivotal role played by organizations like the Ministry of Women Development of Pakistan and the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA) in fostering practical cooperation between the two countries in the realm of women’s affairs.

Underlining China’s unwavering commitment to gender equality, Consul General Yang Yundong reiterated the Chinese government’s dedication to protecting women’s rights and interests.

He emphasized the comprehensive development of women as a fundamental policy, showcasing China’s achievements in narrowing gender gaps in education and increasing women’s participation in various fields.

Recognizing the remarkable contributions of women in Pakistan, Consul General Yang Yundong highlighted the inspiring stories of Pakistani women leaders such as Benazir Bhutto and Maryam Nawaz.

He also applauded the bravery and dedication of individuals like ASP Syeda Naqvi and police officer Suhai Talpur, who have exemplified courage in safeguarding communities.

Call for continued support

Speaking at the event, Barrister Shahida Jameel paid tribute to the resilience of women leaders in both China and Pakistan.

Additionally, emphasizing the need for continued support to promote women’s participation across all spheres of life.

Other speakers echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of encouraging women’s involvement in every aspect of societal development.
