Claudia Sheinbaum became the first president to achieve such a massive victory in Mexico’s democratic history, according to the electoral authority.
Sheinbaum, the favored successor of outgoing president Andres Manuel, vowed to continue in the direction set by populist leftist leaders.
For the first time in the 200 years of the republic I will become the first woman president of Mexico,” Sheinbaum told supporters to loud cheers of “president, president”.
“As I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone. We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our mothers, our daughters, and our granddaughters,” Claudia Sheinbaum said after her victory was confirmed.
Currently, the ruling coalition is also on the track for a possible two-thirds supermajority in both houses of Congress, to bring any constitutional reform without any support from the opposition.
However, many analysts believe she faces a challenging road ahead. She must adhere to the party’s ongoing policies while implementing significant economic reforms to boost low economic growth.
Furthermore, following her victory, there is widespread hope that she will address and change long-standing issues of gender-based violence in the country.
