Meeting between Chinese and Nepali dignitaries

Kathmandu, 13 September 2022 (TDI): The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, Li Zhanshu, along with his delegation, visited Kathmandu on 12 September.

He was invited by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Nepal, Agni Prasad Sapkota. Li Zhanshu is on a four-day official visit to Nepal.

Agni Prasad Sapkota, along with the senior officials of the Federal Parliament and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warmly welcomed Li Zhanshu and his delegation.

Bilateral talks

Both the dignitaries held official talks leading their respective delegations in Kathmandu on September 12.


The two dignitaries, while expressing happiness over the excellent state of bilateral relations and cooperation subsisting between Nepal and China, held discussions on different matters of mutual interests during the talks.

Agni Prasad Sapkota reiterated Nepal’s commitment to the One China Policy and not to allow any activity against China in Nepali territory.

He also appreciated the people and Government of the People’s Republic of China for their generous support and cooperation in Nepal’s development endeavor. He expressed hope for an enhanced level of support from China for post-pandemic recovery and other development priorities of Nepal.

Moreover, he expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for providing Nepal with substantial medical supplies, equipment, and COVID-19 vaccines.

On the other hand, Li Zhanshu expressed China’s continued support for Nepal’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He promised to assist the Nepali Parliament as per its need and requirement at the institution level.

Both parties also exchanged views on the importance of implementing connectivity infrastructures under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Chinese side, on the request of the Nepali delegation, also assured that it would take necessary measures to address the widening trade gaps between the two countries and encourage its entrepreneurs to invest in Nepal, particularly in areas that support the livelihood of the Nepali people.

Both signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Inter-parliamentary Cooperation following the bilateral talks.
