Dhaka, 8 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday. The Foreign Minister of China met his Bangladeshi counterpart, Abdul Momen, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.

Meeting with Foreign Minister of Bangladesh

Chinese Foreign Minister met with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh on Sunday.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh reiterated firm adherence to the ‘One China policy amid an ongoing crisis over Taiwan’s issue.

Moreover, Abdul Momen said that Bangladesh is closely following the developments in the Taiwan Strait. The Minister urged all parties concerned to exercise utmost restraint and refrain from any actions that may aggravate tensions.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh further called on states to prevent actions that will undermine peace and stability in the region and beyond.

Additionally, Abdul Momen also mentioned that Bangladesh advocates multilateralism and adheres to the five principles of peaceful coexistence.

Moreover, Abdul Momen stated that separatism must be effectively forestalled; otherwise, it will be a catastrophe for the whole world.

Agreements signed by two officials

The two sides agreed on strengthening cooperation in infrastructure, economic and industrial parks. Bangladesh and China also agreed to promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges and to expand cooperation in local currency settlement, 5G, and clean energy.

The two sides will continue close communication and coordination in international and regional affairs.

Chinese Foreign Minister further announced that China’s grant of zero-tariff treatment for 98 per cent of taxable items of Bangladeshi products exported to China will officially take effect on September 1.

China welcomes more superior products from Bangladesh to China. The two sides also had in-depth exchanges of views on issues of common concern.

After the talks, the two foreign ministers jointly witnessed the signing of cooperation documents on infrastructure, disaster prevention and mitigation, culture and tourism, and maritime affairs.

Meeting with Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, also met with the State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China.

Sheikh Hasina also mentioned that Bangladesh cherishes its traditional friendship with China, and regards China as an important partner in maintaining peace and seeking common development.

Sheikh Hasina said that the country looks forward to deepening the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides and learning from China’s successful experience in poverty reduction and alleviation.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh further mentioned the country firmly adheres to the one-China policy and disapproves of the provocative behaviours of certain countries.

She also said that Bangladesh hopes to jointly safeguard a peaceful and stable environment for China-Bangladesh friendship development.
