Beijing, 4 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese Foreign Minister and State Counselor Wang Yi shared his remarks on the Taiwan question with reporters.

Remarks of the Foreign Minister:

On 2 August, the Chinese Foreign Minister gave an interview with reporters where he pointed out that the one-China principle is the overwhelming consensus of the international community, the political foundation for China’s relations with other countries, the core of China’s core interests, and a red line and bottom line that cannot be crossed.

He said that some people in the United States keep challenging China’s sovereignty on the Taiwan question, hollowing out the one-China policy, and even deliberately creating trouble in the Taiwan Strait.

The Chinese people will never accept such moves, and the international community will also sniff at such unwarranted provocation.

Wang Yi said that, during his visit, the leaders of relevant countries clearly expressed their firm commitment to the one-China policy at the meetings and talks. They all believed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and opposed external interference in China’s internal affairs on the Taiwan question.

This once again shows that the one-China principle is the prevailing trend with overwhelming public support in the international community.

The State Counselor further stressed that the U.S. side’s act in bad faith on the Taiwan question is despicable and will only further bankrupt the United States’ national credibility.

He added that Some U.S. politicians are flagrantly playing with fire on the Taiwan question for selfish gains and making themselves enemies of the 1.4 billion Chinese people.

According to him, they will not come to a good end. The U.S. side has shown the world what a bully it is. This will only make people of all countries see more clearly that the United States is the biggest destroyer of peace today.

Wang Yi stressed that this is an out-and-out farce. The U.S. is playing the dirty tricks to encroach upon China’s sovereignty under the guise of “democracy”, and separatist forces for “Taiwan independence” like Tsai Ing-wen are hanging on to the U.S. coattails, turning their back on the just cause of the Chinese nation.

He added that these perverse actions cannot in any way change the prevailing international consensus on the one-China principle, nor can they change the irreversible historical trend of Taiwan’s return to the motherland.

Concluding his remarks, he said, those who play with fire will not come to a good end. Those who offend China will surely be punished.

Pelosi’s visit and Chinese reaction

On August 2, 2022, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, paid a brief visit to Taiwan as part of a tour of Asia that also included brief visits in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. The White House did not formally endorse the visit.

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) criticized the visit. The PRC, which considers Taiwan and the ROC-held areas to be a part of its territory, has repeatedly stated that a high-ranking US official’s visit to Taiwan would violating China’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and strategic interests by the US.
