Beijing (TDI): Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke on phone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, on Wednesday, on the latter’s invitation.
They shared serious concerns over Israel’s recent actions in the region and emphasized the necessity for an immediate ceasefire and resumption of diplomatic negotiations.
Minister Abdelatty emphasized the gravity of the situation in the region, expressing fear that “the situation is critical, and the international community is fearful that the Middle East could descend into complete chaos, thereby directly endangering the security of nations within and surrounding the region.”

He denounced the Israeli strike against Iran as a “blatant infringement of international law” and emphasized the need to return to political resolution of the Iranian nuclear program issue.
Sharing similar sentiments, Wang Yi said, “Israel’s disregard for international law and international norms has caused a sudden escalation of tensions in the region.” He added that China is seriously concerned that the situation may get out of control.
“China again urges all parties involved in, and especially Israel, to prioritize the safety and lives of people of neighboring countries, immediately cease hostilities, and create a good atmosphere for the resumption of exchange and negotiations,” he reiterated China’s position.

Wang Yi also acknowledged Cairo for leading a joint statement of 20 Arab and African Muslim countries, calling for a ceasefire, an end to hostilities, and fresh negotiations on the Iranian nuclear matter. This move is timely and necessary to dispel the crisis,” the FM noted, adding: “China fully supports Egypt’s constructive role in upholding peace and stability in the region.”.
In the future, both sides reiterated their willingness to further strengthen coordination in multilateral forums, including at the United Nations. Wang Yi emphasized that “the international community, especially regional countries, should reach consensus and make more concerted actions.”
Lastly, both foreign ministers pledged cooperation on a bilateral basis to support peace process and to proceed with efforts to ease tensions and prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
