Islamabad (TDI): Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong on Thursday emphasized the vital role of science and technology in solving today’s global challenges, describing institutions like NUST as “the need of the hour.
He made these remarks during a visit to the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), where he lauded the university’s innovation-driven academic environment and modern research facilities, drawing a favorable comparison with China’s renowned Tsinghua University.
The envoy’s visit marked a major step toward strengthening bilateral academic cooperation between Pakistan and China.
He stressed the need for increased academic and research linkages, especially in the social sciences, and emphasized the significance of experience-sharing across academic, governmental, and cultural platforms.

Welcoming the envoy, Rector NUST Dr Muhammad Zahid Latif described the occasion a “historic day” and expressed optimism that it would pave the way for long-term cooperation between Chinese and Pakistani academic institutions.
He underlined NUST’s ongoing partnerships with multiple Chinese universities but urged greater diplomatic facilitation to further enhance and streamline these relations.
He also announced the launch of the Jinnah School of Public Policy & Leadership, aimed at advancing evidence-based policymaking in light of regional and international developments.

During his visit, the envoy was briefed on major initiatives at the university.
He also visited the National Centre of Artificial Intelligence and the School of Interdisciplinary Engineering and Sciences.
The ambassador witnessed NUST’s work in modern technologies and interdisciplinary innovation, and engaged in a lively exchange with students, encouraging them to pursue academic excellence and become agents of development.
