Beijing (TDI): China’s box office revenue reached over 42.5 billion yuan (about $5.91 billion) in 2024, the China Film Administration said on Wednesday.
Domestic films contributed more than 33.4 billion yuan, making up 78.68% of the total, the latest data revealed.
Seventy-nine movies grossed more than 100 million yuan — with 55 of them being domestic productions.
China also added over 4,600 new cinema screens in cities in the previous year, bringing the countrywide total to 90,968.

Urban cinemas recorded more than one billion moviegoer visits in 2024, the data showed.
The growth and development of China’s box office over the past few decades have been remarkable, positioning the country as a significant player in the global film industry.
