China Urges US to End Trade Curbs After Nvidia Greenlight

Beijing (TDI): China has urged the United States to remove what it calls “unreasonable” trade restrictions, following Washington’s recent decision to allow Nvidia to sell its H20 artificial intelligence chips to Chinese buyers.

In a statement released Friday, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) welcomed the move but said more needed to be done to reset trade ties between the two powers.

“We’ve noted the US decision to approve the sale of Nvidia’s H20 chips,” the spokesperson said. “But we believe this should be just the beginning. The US needs to move away from a zero-sum mindset and lift the broader set of restrictive trade measures it has imposed on China.”

The remarks come in the wake of recent economic and trade discussions held in London. Both countries, according to MOFCOM, are maintaining regular contact and have begun following up on the agreements reached during those talks.

The ministry noted that China has approved the export of sensitive items in line with legal requirements, and that the US, in turn, relaxed some restrictions earlier this month as part of a reciprocal arrangement.

But the tone from Beijing remains firm. The spokesperson stressed that cooperation, not confrontation, is the way forward.

“Trying to contain or suppress China will not work,” they said. “The only viable path is one of win-win cooperation.”

Beijing also took aim at earlier US measures, particularly those introduced in May that targeted Chinese tech giant Huawei. Those restrictions tightened controls on high-performance chips like Huawei’s Ascend line, moves that China labeled as politically motivated and harmful to fair competition.

“These actions severely damage the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” the MOFCOM spokesperson said.

Looking ahead, China hopes the US will “meet us halfway”, a phrase often used by Chinese officials to signal openness to dialogue, but with the expectation of mutual concessions.

“Only through equal and respectful consultations can we build an environment that supports cooperation and helps stabilize the global semiconductor supply chain,” the statement concluded.
