Gaza, 23 February 2024(TDI): In a recent statement, China’s permanent UN representative emphasized the need for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and condemned the US veto at the UN Security Council.
In addition, he emphasized that the primary goal of any Security Council decision should be to ensure this ceasefire.
Additionally, he emphasized that the US withdrawal of an Algerian-drafted proposal on Tuesday indicated that the Security Council had once again missed another chance to call for a cease-fire in Gaza.
Reportedly, continuing the fight for even one more day will result in further human losses and greater crisis.
According to the latest information, the US has vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution advocating for a swift cease-fire in Israel’s war on Gaza, which has resulted in over 29,000 casualties.
Disapproval of US Veto
China’s UN envoy, Zhang Jun, voiced “strong disappointment and dissatisfaction” with the United States’ veto attempt.
“The US veto sends the wrong message, pushing the situation in Gaza into a more dangerous one,” he added.

Zhang Jun emphasized that an early cease-fire in Gaza is necessary for saving people’s lives and avoiding a larger conflict.
Furthermore, opposing a ceasefire in Gaza is “nothing different from giving the green light to the continued slaughter,” Zhang said.
Additionally, Zhang Jun informed the members of the Security Council that the international community has voiced a common wish for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.
He underscored that it is the consensus of the Security Council’s large majority.
Meanwhile, Zhang stated that China anticipates the draft resolution from the United States and hopes for responsible action.
Condemnation of Israeli Actions
According to reports, over 1.5 million Palestinians are imprisoned in Rafah, where Israeli military invasions could result in civilian casualties and humanitarian disasters.
On top of that, China strongly condemns such acts, and Israel must give up any plans to attack Rafah and end collective punishment.
Zhang argued that the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures to avoid genocide must be adopted immediately.
Appeal for Negotiations
In a statement, China’s envoy to the UN highlighted that China encourages all parties involved in the current dispute between Lebanon and Israel, Syria and Israel, and the Red Sea to remain peaceful and controlled, avoid escalating tensions, and take steps toward negotiations to end the Middle East’s vicious cycle of conflict and violence.
At the end, China’s envoy to the UN, Zhang Jun, concluded that addressing Palestine’s long-standing injustices and resolving its desire for an autonomous state are imperative.
Furthermore, China urges Palestine’s membership in the United Nations and urges organizing a more powerful international peace conference for a just solution to the conflict.
