China to Host SCO Summit Next Year

Beijing, 10 September 2024 (TDI): China has pledged to host a “friendly, united, and fruitful” Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit next year.

Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong said that China, holding the rotating presidency of the SCO for 2024-2025, will be the venue for the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO.

The summit will mark a significant event for the SCO, the first international organization founded with China as a member and named after a Chinese city.

Since its establishment in 2001, the SCO has followed the Shanghai Spirit, guiding it towards peaceful development and serving as a model for a new type of international relations.

China, under its upcoming presidency, aims to uphold unity and cooperation among member states, implement global initiatives proposed by China, and contribute positively to global peace and prosperity.

Sun outlined China’s vision for its presidency, focusing on the “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”.

Key Areas of Cooperation

Key areas of cooperation will include poverty alleviation, food security, public health, development financing, climate change, green development, industrialization, digital economy, and connectivity.

China will also formulate the SCO summit declaration and development strategy for the next phase.

Additionally, the country plans to host over 100 meetings and activities within the SCO framework to deepen practical cooperation across various fields.
