China and Thailand laud bilateral cooperation

Phnom Penh, 6 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Thailand, Don Pramudwinai, on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministers of China and Thailand met in Phnom Penh during the ASEAN meetings of foreign ministers on East Asia cooperation.

Both states discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation. Minister Pramudwinai appreciated China’s support and trust in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

He said, “he will work hard to maintain ASEAN unity and be committed to properly handling the Myanmar issue.”

China and Thailand laud bilateral cooperation

Minister Yi said China and Thailand have committed to cooperating toward the aim of establishing a community with a shared future. Both states set high hopes for their future collaboration and work to uphold their bilateral ties.

China appreciated Thailand’s active participation in the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative. China also assured its help to Thailand in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Minister Pramudwinai thanked China for assisting Thailand in its time of need. He expressed his pleasure with the ongoing advancement of the two countries’ comprehensive cooperation.

Thailand is prepared to cooperate with China to promote the expansion of the strategic relationship between the two countries.

Discussion on the Myanmar issue

Thailand expressed concern about the current situation in Myanmar and hopes that China will support them in the Myanmar crisis.

Wang Yi said China will continue to play a constructive role in the Myanmar crisis. He believes that the ASEAN can uphold ASEAN leadership in an order to push for a “soft landing” of the Myanmar issue through consultation and discussion.

ASEAN, in this way, will prevent any external interference and will avoid further complications in the Myanmar issue. Moreover, it will also fulfill the principle of non-interference.
