China Summons Nvidia Over Security Concerns in H20 Chips

Beijing (TDI): China’s top internet regulator has summoned US tech giant Nvidia, demanding clarification over alleged security vulnerabilities in its H20 high-performance computing chips, according to a statement issued Thursday by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).

The CAC, citing concerns over possible backdoors and other cybersecurity risks, instructed Nvidia to submit a detailed explanation along with supporting documentation to address the matter.

The move was made in accordance with China’s Cybersecurity Law, Data Security Law, and Personal Information Protection Law, the agency said via its official WeChat account.

The regulator noted that recent reports had flagged serious security flaws in Nvidia’s chips, which are widely used for AI and advanced computing tasks in the Chinese market.

In the same statement, the CAC referenced earlier calls by US lawmakers advocating that American-made advanced chips include built-in tracking and location functions.

Chinese authorities have raised alarms over the possibility that imported hardware embedded with such features could compromise user privacy and threaten the country’s data security.

The CAC said its move reflects a broader push to strengthen protections for domestic users and reinforce the security of China’s digital infrastructure, especially as dependence on foreign semiconductor technology remains a delicate issue amid heightened US-China tech tensions.
