China, Pakistan Agricultural Cooperation Forum Boosts Momentum

Islamabad (TDI): The China‑Pakistan High‑Quality Agricultural Cooperation Development Forum, hosted today by the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan (CCCPK), reaffirmed commitment to deepening agricultural industrial collaboration between China and Pakistan.

Opening remarks by Wang Huihua, President of CCCPK, were followed by high-level speeches from Amina Bajwa – Head of Program of FAO Pakistan, Ch. Waseem Ajmal – Federal Secretary of Ministry of National Food Security and Research, and Shi Yuanqiang – the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy.

All speakers extolled the achievements of China–Pakistan cooperation in agriculture and pledged to further modernize the sector.

Chargé d’Affaires Yuanqiang noted that agri-sector cooperation between China and Pakistan is yielding a 27% year-on-year growth for the last three years. He also told the audience that industrial machinery has also been brought into the fold of agricultural collaborations.

He shed light on the impact of agriculture-related trainings being undertaken by Pakistani students and young researchers in China.

The forum dove into five thematic tracks:

  • Contract farming of chili and sesame
  • Development of hybrid “double‑zero” canola
  • Buffalo breeding and dairy processing
  • Upgrading of storage and logistics infrastructure
  • Financial empowerment to support agricultural partnerships

The organizers also launched a report titled Typical Cases of China‑Pakistan Agricultural Cooperation and signed multiple MOUs covering key sectors: double‑zero canola, integrated oil‑feed systems, agri‑livestock machinery, and buffalo farming.

These agreements aim to accelerate the development of value‑added production chains from farm to market. The presence of notable farmer units and agricultural stakeholders from all provinces of Pakistan, especially Punjab, added more value to the proceedings of the forum.

This forum builds on earlier steps taken under CPEC. In late April, the Fourth Joint Working Group on Agriculture convened in Beijing, green‑lighting a second wave of technology‑driven projects; such as Sichuan Litong’s chili and Guangxi Royal Dairy’s buffalo‑dairy initiatives.

Since November 2018, a formal Joint Working Group has overseen progress on capacity building, germplasm exchange, mechanization, food processing, fisheries, and disease‑free livestock zones.

In May 2025, Pakistan and China reaffirmed their CPEC‑2.0 vision, highlighting agricultural innovation alongside connectivity and clean energy priorities.

Today’s forum sends a strong message that agriculture is no longer a peripheral concern but a central focus of CPEC’s strategic expansion. Boosting yields, preserving quality, ensuring food security, and fostering green farming practices remain top priorities for Islamabad and Beijing.
