BEIJING, (TDI): China has strongly condemned and opposed recent U.S. arms sales and military assistance to Taiwan, lodging a formal protest with the United States.
The protest follows the announcement on December 21 that U.S. President Joe Biden approved $571.3 million in defense assistance for Taiwan, alongside $295 million in arms sales approved by the U.S. State Department.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson reiterated that these actions severely violate the “One China” principle and the terms of the three China-U.S. joint communique, particularly the 1982 August 17 Communique.
The spokesperson emphasized that this decision undermines China’s sovereignty and security interests, violating U.S. commitments made to not support Taiwan’s independence.

The spokesperson also warned that the U.S. decision sends a dangerous signal to separatist forces in Taiwan, highlighting that the Taiwan issue is central to China’s national interests and cannot be compromised.
“Arming Taiwan in support of its independence is like playing with fire, and the United States will get burned,” the spokesperson said.
China has urged the U.S. to cease its military support for Taiwan and halt any actions that threaten the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese government vowed to take all necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
