Qingdao, 11 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister of Nepal, Narayan Khadka, in Qingdao, on Wednesday.

Both the Foreign Ministers evaluated the relationship between China and Nepal generally and agreed to deepen the relations. The two sides enhanced cooperation in various sectors such as people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

Likewise, both states increased direct flights to facilitate personnel exchanges. China also welcomed Nepali students to return to China to resume classes.

China and Nepal strengthen bilateral ties

The Foreign Minister of Nepal reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the One-China principle. He stated that the Nepali territory will not be allowed to be used for any activity against China.

Chinese Foreign Minister also emphasized China’s continued support for Nepal’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Both sides decided to accelerate the implementation of projects supported by China in Nepal. The Chinese delegation gave the Nepali delegation confidence to begin building on the second phase of the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project.

The two sides established a joint mechanism for pandemic control in border ports. Additionally, they agreed to allow two-way trade through the ports of Rasuwa-Kyerung and Tatopani-Jangmu.

One-way trade will also be promoted through the port of Hilsa-Pulang, after the latest COVID-19 pandemic wave in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Wang Yi further announced to provide 800 million RMB to Nepal for the year 2022. China agreed to give Nepal chemical fertilizer and set up a facility producing chemical fertilizers to support Nepal’s agricultural sector.

China also promised to promote Chinese investment in Nepal’s manufacturing capacity development and expand collaboration in the export of Nepali tea and traditional medicinal plants.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China is committed to providing Nepal with 3 million Yuan in disaster relief supplies in various regions of the country.

Nepal will also get extra medical supplies and logistics valued at 2 million RMB from China. Additionally, China will give Nepal all the COVID-19-related medical aid and additional vaccinations that they would need.

Nepali Foreign Minister’s remarks

Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Khadka, thanked China’s government for its assistance in earthquake assistance. Nepal benefits from China’s significant contribution to medical supplies, equipment, and life-saving COVID-19 vaccines.

Foreign Minister Khadka asked for more help in strengthening health facilities and transferring cutting-edge cancer treatment technologies. Along these lines, China also agreed to provide assistance and training to treat cancer.

Khadka said Nepal would like to deepen mutually-beneficial cooperation with China. Nepal will make new progress in the strategic cooperative partnership of enduring friendship between both states.

Khadka said, “Nepal supports China’s legitimate position on internal affairs such as Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. Nepal always advocates for upholding the UN Charter and believes that no country has the right to impose its will on others.”

Nepal is also eager to actively participate in the goals of both the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI).

The two sides conducted in-depth communication on bilateral relations and pragmatic cooperation and reached a broad consensus.

Both states also exchanged views on continuing cooperation in various regional and multilateral forums on matters of mutual interests.
