China Marks 88th Anniversary of Resistance War

Beijing (TDI): China marked the 88th anniversary of its full-scale resistance against Japanese invasion with a solemn ceremony and the opening of a major historical exhibition in Beijing on Monday.

The events were held at the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, located near the historic Lugou Bridge, also known as the Marco Polo Bridge, where the conflict began on July 7, 1937 with a surprise attack by Japanese forces, sparking China’s nationwide fight for survival and sovereignty.

Senior Communist Party leader Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau, delivered a keynote speech and formally inaugurated the exhibition titled “For National Liberation and World Peace.”

The exhibition also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory in both the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader World Anti-Fascist War.

Cai emphasized that the Lugou Bridge Incident marked the start of China’s 14-year struggle against foreign aggression, during which the Chinese military and civilians united under immense pressure to open what became the main Eastern front in the global fight against fascism.

Following the opening ceremony, Cai and other officials laid flowers in tribute to war martyrs and joined around 600 attendees in touring the exhibition.

China’s war of resistance lasted longer than any other front in World War II and accounted for over 35 million casualties, including both military personnel and civilians.

Historians widely recognize China’s resistance as instrumental in weakening Japanese forces and shaping the broader Allied campaign in Asia and beyond.
