China Calls for Immediate Lifting of Unilateral Sanctions

-

WASHINGTON 22nd August 2024 (TDI): A Chinese envoy called for the immediate lifting of all unilateral sanctions imposed by certain countries, denouncing these actions as illegal under international law and the UN Charter. The envoy warned that such sanctions not only exacerbate the economic and social hardships of targeted nations but also risk igniting new conflicts and instability.

Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, made these statements during a Security Council open debate on peacebuilding and conflict prevention. He stressed that effective conflict prevention requires a supportive external environment, which is undermined by unilateral sanctions.

Fu urged the UN to strengthen its support for development, particularly through peacekeeping operations and special political missions, which should focus on the economic growth and sustainable development of the countries they assist. He also emphasized the vital role of regional organizations in fostering political trust and regional cooperation.

The envoy advocated for an open and non-discriminatory international economic and trade environment, allowing developing countries to participate fairly in global economic, scientific, and technological cooperation. He also called for reforms in the international financial system to better address the needs of developing nations, particularly in areas such as development financing, climate change, and capacity building.

Fu condemned unilateralism and interference in the internal affairs of other countries, reaffirming China’s stance against hegemony. He pointed out that the imposition of unilateral sanctions not only worsens existing challenges but also contributes to future conflicts.

In addressing broader global issues, Fu noted the increasing turmoil in various regions and its spillover effects. He called for enhanced conflict prevention measures that tackle both the symptoms and root causes of conflicts. He highlighted poverty and underdevelopment as major sources of conflict, emphasizing that poverty reduction and development are crucial for achieving lasting peace.

Fu also underscored the importance of effective governance in maintaining stability and sustainable development. He argued that governments should actively address market failures and invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare to improve public welfare and ensure long-term stability.

Inclusive development, particularly the protection of human rights for women, youth, and other vulnerable groups, is essential for building a lasting foundation for peace, Fu added. He highlighted China’s commitment to supporting the Global South in achieving peace and sustainable development, pointing to successful initiatives such as the China-UN Peace and Development Trust Fund.

One notable project funded by this initiative is Juncao Technology, which assists farmers in 107 countries in transitioning to higher value-added industries like mushroom farming and animal husbandry, addressing issues such as poverty, food security, and employment. Fu praised the ongoing efforts of Professor Lin Zhanxi, the 82-year-old inventor of Juncao Technology, who continues to promote this innovation globally.

Fu reaffirmed China’s readiness to work with the international community to help more developing countries achieve self-sufficiency, foster peace, and build a foundation for global stability.
