Santiago, 2 July 2022 (TDI): The Undersecretary of International Economic Relations of Chile, José Miguel Ahumada, met the Minister of Foreign Trade of Cuba, Rodrigo Malmierca.

The meeting focused on initiating a regular international political discussion in Latin America. The two officials urged that there was room for relationship growth, particularly in business.

Compared to the rest of Latin America, Chile is thought to be more pro-American. The Organization of American States (OAS), from which Cuba was ejected in 1962, has received explicit backing from Chile.

Chile also played a crucial role in Cuba joining the Rio Group as a full member in December. The Rio Group is a permanent association of political consultation of Latin American as well as Caribbean countries.

Former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, welcomed Cuba and discussed the importance of building political cohesion in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The start of a regular international political discussion in Latin America is what they are hoping for. Reestablishing full diplomatic ties with Cuba, which had been cut in 1964 at the request of the United States, was one of their first foreign policy initiatives.

Chile-Cuba Relations

The two countries have signed agreements for cooperation in several areas, including biotechnology. The agreements strengthen the long-standing, intimate political and economic ties that have grown over the preceding 20 years.

Chile has consistently voiced opposition to the US blockade in Cuba. Cubans’ quality of life is significantly affected by the blockade.

While investors distanced, causing the country’s currency and stock market to decline, Latin America’s socialist leaders applauded the election of Chile’s Gabriel Boric as President in December.
