Ottawa (TDI): In his first media talk after the snap federal election, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined his key priorities for the term, focusing on his government’s response to international relations, domestic challenges, and political unity.
Following the Liberal Party’s victory in the election, securing 168 out of 343 seats in the House of Commons, Carney now leads a minority government.
Although Carney’s party fell short of the majority threshold, his leadership is poised to address key issues both at home and on the international stage.
Strategic Visit by King Charles III
Carney began by announcing the upcoming visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to Canada later this month. The royal visit, set to take place on May 27, will be a historic occasion, underlying Canada’s sovereignty and international standing.
Carney emphasized the significance of the visit, which aligns with his efforts to strengthen Canada’s position in the face of ongoing tensions with the United States; particularly regarding President Donald Trump’s remarks about Canada potentially becoming the 51st US state.
This visit by King Charles is being seen as a diplomatic gesture to reinforce Canada’s independence and will coincide with the opening of Canada’s 45th Parliament.

Upcoming Talks with President Trump
On the international front, Carney is preparing for his first official visit to the White House next week to meet with US President Donald Trump. The meeting comes amidst strained relations between the two countries, particularly due to Trump’s controversial tariffs and remarks about annexing Canada.
Carney made it clear that his government will continue to “fight for the best deal for Canada” and is committed to “difficult but constructive” negotiations.
He stressed that the government would not rush into an agreement but would work diligently for Canada’s interests. Carney also mentioned that strengthening relationships with other reliable global partners remains a priority.
Unifying Canada Amid Political Divisions
Domestically, Carney acknowledged the deep political divisions that the 2025 election revealed, with the Conservative Party securing the official opposition role. Carney extended an olive branch to Canadians who did not support his party, stressing the importance of national unity during these challenging times.
He pledged to address key concerns raised during the campaign, particularly the rising cost of living and safety issues in communities.
He also expressed commitment to collaborating with political opponents, including Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, noting the possibility of a special election to allow Poilievre to seek another seat.
