Praia, 5 July 2022 (TDI): The Republic of Cape Verde celebrated forty-seven years of independence since achieving independence from Portugal in 1975.

The country received diplomatic cables from the White House, UAE and the Gulf states, Russia, India, Pakistan, and other partner countries from around the world.

Independence from Portugal

The Republic of Cape Verde is an archipelago island nation to the west of Senegal and Mauritania and is located at the westernmost point of the African continent.

Until the arrival of the Portuguese in 1456, the island was largely uninhabited and therefore became the first permanent European settlement in the tropics.

As a Portuguese colony, the country was heavily used as a slave outpost for the transatlantic slave trade, and the country’s history is subsequently mired in colonial violence and racial injustices.

The country first initiated nationalistic efforts for gaining independence in 1956 with the neighboring Portuguese colony of Guinea-Bissau under the clandestine African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

Following an armed rebellion that turned into war in 1961 and a revolution in Portugal in 1974, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau gained formal independence in 1973 and 1975 respectively.

Marking the 47th Independence

To celebrate the country’s 47th Independence Day, a special session also took place in Cape Verde’s National Assembly. The country’s President, the Council of Ministers, and foreign dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

The country is also making strides in democratic institutions and governance. In this context, it was lauded by the US Secretary of State last year.
