Moldova and the War in Ukraine
Even though one of the poorest countries in Europe, Moldova has gained renewed regional significance since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Similar to Ukraine, it faces a separatist break-away region, the de-facto state of Transnistria. Currently, the Russian military is stationed in Transnistria which is internationally recognized as a part of Moldova.
Moreover, thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their home country have found refuge in Moldova.
