London (TDI): Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney met with his British counterpart Keir Starmer at Downing Street to reinforce the UK-Canada historic partnership.
As his first overseas venture, the UK is Carney’s second stop after Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron.
On his arrival in the UK, Carney said: “Canada and the UK have a strong partnership rooted in history and focused on the future.”
Great to see you, @CanadianPM.
Together, we will work to deliver security and growth for people in the UK and Canada.
And we will continue in our combined efforts to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for a just and lasting peace. pic.twitter.com/wAgJLZByBY

Keir Starmer, for his part, said: “The UK and Canada are the closest of sovereign allies and friends.”
He specifically mentioned Ukraine and all the support it can use to be in the best possible place to reach a ceasefire agreement with Russia.
“Together, we will work to deliver security and growth for people in the UK and Canada. And we will continue in our combined efforts to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for a just and lasting peace,” Starmer posted on X.
Earlier, the Canadian Prime Minister also met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Canada is facing a trade war launched by US President Donald Trump and has been prioritizing relations with the European Countries and the EU since the new Prime Minister assumed office last week.
As for any bilateral meeting with Donald Trump, Carney maintains that he will talk to him at the right time.
For now, Canada has imposed counter-tariffs in retaliation to harsh trade moves by the Trump administration.
As for Trump’s offensive remarks regarding making Canada another state of the US, Canada has consistently rejected such statements.
EU countries are also in the line of fire as Trump administration intensifies its tariff campaign.
This unites Canada and the EU in resisting the trade wars and put up a joint front.
Moreover, Canada also aligns with the EU on Ukraine’s ceasefire talks which the US is trying to dictate single-handedly.

“I want to ensure that France, and the whole of Europe, works enthusiastically with Canada, the most European of non-European countries, and at the same time resolutely North American, determined, like you, to maintain the most positive relations possible with the United States,” Carney said during the visit.
