Ottawa (TDI): On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the country’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine at the General Assembly in September amid the atrocities unfolding in Gaza.
This decision came after several Western countries also announced the recognition of a Palestinian State, which includes France, the UK, Spain, and Ireland.
He said that Ottawa was hoping that a two-state solution could be achieved through negotiations, but now it seems impossible as the approach was “no longer tenable.”
“Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,” Carney told the media.

Carney said that the recognition is based on promises of several reforms from the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas, and a commitment to hold elections in 2026.
He also added that Hamas can play no role in a better future for Palestine and will not be allowed to take part in elections
“Preserving a two-state solution means standing with all people who choose peace over violence or terrorism,” Carney added.
On Wednesday, the National Council of Canadian Muslims also welcomed Carney’s announcement but called on Canada to take other necessary immediate steps to stop Israel’s current assault, of starvation as a method of warfare, on Gaza.

The group compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to Trump’s pressure campaign to make Canada the 51st state in the US. A statement given by Trump earlier.
“Canada must continue to stand by our values to drive an independent foreign policy, particularly as the same Trump administration that backs the annexation of Gaza also threatens Canada with the idea of a 51st state of the US”, the group said in a statement.
The group further mentioned that Canada should apply further sanctions on the Israeli government and impose a full two-way arms embargo on the Israeli military and review the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, and provide better help to those trying to escape Gaza to reunite with their loved ones in Canada.
