Ottawa, 14 September 2021 (TDI): Canadian Parliament Member Karina Gould participated online at the UN Flash Appeal meeting for Afghanistan on the 13th of September. The Permanent Representative of Canada Robert Keith Rae attended the meeting as well.
At the meeting, the leaders discussed the necessity of emergency-aid funds for Afghanistan due to the Taliban takeover leading to the possibility of a humanitarian crisis for the population. According to the UN, 97% of the population is below the poverty line, 93% do not have enough to eat in Afghanistan. On her part, Gould referred to the dangers Afghans are facing, such as the potential collapse of financial and social systems and the impact on the most vulnerable.
Gould also stressed the need to act globally before the situation deteriorates further. She announced Canada´s commitment, by promising 50 Million Dollars towards humanitarian response. Gould mentioned that Canada has provided more than 27 Million Dollars to Afghanistan in 2021. At the end of the Flash Appeal, 1 Billion Dollars were pledged by the global leaders.
