New York, 24 September 2021 (TDI): Raychelle Omamo, Cabinet Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kenya, took part in an open United Nations Security Council debate on the maintenance of International Peace, Security and Climate.

This debate led by Ireland’s Prime Minister, Micheál Martin and attended by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

Raychelle Omamo said that it is essential to build on technology, local knowledge, and practices that have been shown to improve community resilience. Climate action must be fair and be perceived as fair to gain the support of the vast majority of states.

Moreover, it was stated that climate action mandates, including environmental preservation and restoration, must be included in UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions, particularly for Africa.

Further, in honor of UNEP’s forthcoming 50th anniversary, the Cabinet Secretary stressed that the nexus must benefit from the Science-Policy Interface that is rooted in the work of the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Programme. The growing body of evidence must be developed with experts, states, and institutions in the region where the challenge is most keenly felt, Raychelle Omamo said.
