BRICS Leaders Issue Joint Declaration

Kazan (TDI): Leaders of BRICS nations adopted a comprehensive joint declaration at the conclusion of their summit in Kazan, addressing a range of global issues from United Nations (UN) reforms to ongoing international conflicts.

The declaration, comprising 134 provisions, emphasized the need for significant reforms within the UN, particularly expanding the Security Council’s representation to include more developing nations in order to better address global challenges.

The declaration reaffirmed BRICS’ support for a more democratic, representative, and effective UN, while also calling for the prompt adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

Additionally, the leaders highlighted the need for the UN to play a central role in governing artificial intelligence at the global level.

Global conflicts, including those in the Middle East and Ukraine, were also a focal point.

BRICS expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, particularly in the Gaza Strip, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Leaders stressed the importance of establishing a sovereign Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders and reiterated their support for Palestine’s full membership in the UN.

Proposals on Ukraine

On Ukraine, BRICS members acknowledged various proposals aimed at resolving the conflict through diplomacy, urging a peaceful resolution.

The declaration also criticized the impact of unilateral sanctions, noting their detrimental effect on the global economy, particularly on food and energy security, and efforts to alleviate poverty.

BRICS leaders stressed the need to prevent an arms race in space and called for global agreement to ensure space security.

Economic reforms were another key aspect, with leaders advocating for changes to the Bretton Woods institutions to enhance the role of developing countries in the global economy.

They also welcomed the establishment of a BRICS investment platform, aimed at boosting investment flows to BRICS nations and other Global South countries, utilizing the New Development Bank’s infrastructure.

Additionally, BRICS supported Russia’s proposal to establish a grain exchange, which could eventually expand to other agricultural sectors, further strengthening food security within the bloc.

Leaders also reiterated the need for a fairer and more inclusive international financial system to address global financial challenges.
