Brasilia, 31 March 2022 (TDI): The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Carlos Franca received the Vice Representative of Trade of the United States, Ambassador Jayme White.

In the meeting, they discussed topics related to matters of bilateral trade and regional value chains. Furthermore, they discussed the current situation of International Trade.

The two officials agreed to work to further increase bilateral trade. Moreover, they also agreed to strengthen regional value chains.

Importantly, the officials discussed ways to enhance cooperation. The Brazilian Foreign Minister pointed to the upcoming Summit of the Americas as an opportunity to advance the process.

The Summit of the Americas is to be held in June this year in Los Angeles. They also discussed the importance of workers’ rights and the protection of the environment.

In addition, Carlos Franca expressed concern about the impact of the War in Ukraine on international trade. He specifically mentioned the effects of the conflict on the fertilizer market, and hence on food and agriculture.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister also highlighted the importance of strengthening the multilateral trade system. Especially under current circumstances.

Brazil-USA Relations

The history of bilateral relations between the US and Brazil is long. It goes back to the independence of Brazil when the United States became the first country to recognize its independence.

However, the relations between the two countries fluctuated throughout history. The ties have been through periods of disagreements and cooperation.

Brazil is USA’s 14th largest trading partner. While the USA is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner. Total trade between the countries amounted to $73.7 billion in total goods trade in 2019.

In 2019, when the current Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro was elected, the relations again became friendly and cooperative.

There are many bilateral agreements between the US and Brazil regarding a wide range of fields, including trade, economy, security and military, and environment. President Donald Trump designated Brazil as America’s major Non-NATO ally.
