Bilateral Talks: Pakistan China Trade Officials Meet

Islamabad, 12 September 2024 (TDI): A meeting was held between Ling Ji, the Vice Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, and Mr. Jam Kamal Khan, the Federal Minister for Commerce, during the SCO Ministerial Conference.

The meeting was also attended by senior representatives of the China and Pakistani ministries of commerce.

The vice minister of China praised Pakistan for organizing the first-ever ministerial conference of the SCO’s ministers in charge of foreign trade and economy, and he assured Pakistan of China’s full support.

Both parties decided during the meeting to call a meeting of the Committee on Trade in Goods of the Free Trade Agreement and to examine trade-enhancing opportunities further.

The parties reached a consensus that the agriculture sector has tremendous growth potential. China wanted Pakistan to supply high-quality goods with its eagerness.

Pakistan was invited by the Chinese side to take part in the China International Import Exhibition in Shanghai this year, and they informed Pakistan that a sizable space had been set aside for them.

The Pakistani side stated that 33 enterprises would be participating in the expo, and a national pavilion will be established.

The Gwadar Port should be operationalized at maximum capacity as soon as possible, it was also decided during the meeting.

Pakistani officials have reported that a high-level group has recently shared its proposals for bringing the Port fully operational, at the Prime Minister’s request.
