Beijing Warns NATO: Stay Out of Asia-Pacific

Beijing (TDI): China’s Foreign Ministry released a firm condemnation of NATO’s expanding military stance and defense ambitions, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to world peace and stability.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) tweeted on Wednesday condemning the bloc’s attempts at raising defense spending and its growing involvement in Asian-Pacific affairs.

The remarks come in response to NATO’s recent call on member states to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP aimed at a “more lethal NATO,” despite the alliance already accounting for 55% of the world’s military spending. Beijing criticized the alliance for operating beyond its geographical mandate and extending its reach into regions far beyond the Euro-Atlantic, defined in its founding charter.

Speaking at a press conference , China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated: NATO is self-presented as a regional organization; however, it is constantly projecting its influence outside geographical borders into the Asia-Pacific region by claiming that what is happening there and in the Euro-Atlantic is ‘interconnected.’ The spokesperson added that the world is not unaware of NATO’s strategic interests, and countries in the Asia-Pacific remain cautious about its expanding presence.

The official stressed that NATO should move from its “Cold War mentality, abandon bloc confrontation, and reject zero-sum approach”. He called on the alliance to be more responsible in aligning with the international community and to uphold regional independence.

The statement continued, “We urge NATO to reflect on its own actions, hear the righteous voice of the world, and refrain from manipulating things related to China.”.

The post, which has drawn enormous global interest, is indicative of China’s heightened concern with Western military encroachment in its surroundings and China itself being labeled as a security risk.

As tensions mount among military alliances and emerging powers, Beijing always promotes multilateralism, peaceful development, and a balanced international order without hegemonic interference.
