Bangladesh Students Want Hasina Back for Trial as Murder Cases Against Her Reach 71

DHAKA 28 August 2024 (TDI): Five more murder cases have been filed against Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, bringing the total number of cases against the former Awami League leader to 71 students want her back to face trial, local media reported on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the students who overturned Hasina government want her to return to Bangladesh to face trial.

Four of the new cases were lodged in Dhaka, while one was filed in Rajshahi. The charges involve Hasina, several former ministers, and police officials.

In the first case, Hasina and 48 others are accused of the death of Dulal alias Selim during mass protests in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on August 3. The case was filed by the victim’s brother, Mostafa Kamal, with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saddam Hossain.

The second case involves Hasina and 21 others in connection with the killing of Mansur Miah, a machine operator at Buriganga Filling Station in Mohammadpur on July 19.

The third case charges Hasina and 91 others for the death of Miraz Hossain in Sanarpar, Demra, on August 5. This case was filed by Miraz’s brother, Khorshed Alam, with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain.

In the fourth case, Hasina and 40 others are implicated in the death of 21-year-old Nahidul Islam in Mirpur-10 on July 19. The case was filed by Nahidul’s brother, Md Sabuj, with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan. Accused in this case include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

The Rajshahi case was filed by SM Salahuddin Ahmmed Shamim Sarkar, a member of Bagha upazila Chhatra Dal, against Hasina, former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam, and 52 others, according to Bagha police station’s officer-in-charge, Abu Siddque.

UN estimates that over 600 people were killed in the violence that led to Hasina’s resignation and flight to India in early August after 15 years in power.

Nahid Islam, a 26-year-old sociology student at Dhaka University and coordinator of Students Against Discrimination, is now a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s interim government. He has emphasized the public’s demand for Hasina to face justice in Bangladesh.
