Bangladesh Requests India to Extradite Hasina After Death Sentence

Dhaka (TDI): Bangladesh has officially demanded that India extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following her conviction for crimes against humanity.

The call comes after a Dhaka court sentenced Hasina to death in absentia, accusing her of being responsible for a brutal crackdown against a student-led uprising in 2024.

Hasina, who fled Bangladesh to India in August 2024 following her ouster in a mass uprising, was found guilty of ordering the use of lethal force to suppress the protests.

Along with Hasina, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death, but his whereabouts remain unknown, with Bangladesh authorities suggesting he is hiding in India as well.

In a statement, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry urged India to promptly extradite the two individuals, describing it as an “obligatory responsibility” for India. The government warned that harboring the convicts would be seen as an unfriendly act and a disrespect to justice.

Hasina, who led Bangladesh from 2009 to 2024, was known for her autocratic style of governance, marked by widespread human rights violations, including the mass detention of political opponents and extrajudicial killings.

Despite calls from Bangladesh for an Interpol red notice against Hasina, no such international alert has been issued.

The verdict has stirred significant political tension, with Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, welcoming the court’s decision but calling for calm across the country.

He urged citizens to avoid any actions that could disrupt public order, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace during this time of heightened political sensitivity.
