Bangladesh and Cambodia foster bilateral ties
Bangladesh's Foreign Minister and Cambodian Prime Minister

Dhaka 16 July 2022 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Bangladesh A.K. Abdul Momen, arrived in Cambodia on a two-day official visit on 14 July 2022.

He was received at Phnom Penh International Airport by the Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of Cambodia, Koy Kuong.


Meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister

On Friday, Momen paid a courtesy call on the Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, in Phnom Penh.

In the meeting, they expressed satisfaction with the existing bilateral relations and vowed to strengthen them in the coming days.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, Momen invited the Cambodian prime minister to visit Bangladesh.

Momen asked for Cambodia’s backing as the current ASEAN chair to expedite the repatriation of stranded Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar.

In addition, he asked Cambodia to support Bangladesh’s nomination for the Sectoral Dialogue Partnership.

The Cambodian Prime Minister extended his warmest wishes and greetings to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Momen and Hun Sen also exchanged views on the challenges emanating from the pandemic Covid-19 and the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Both the leaders voiced concerns about the escalating food and energy insecurity affecting people, particularly in the developing world.

They stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful settlement of issues for maintaining peace and stability in the world.


Bangladesh-Cambodia bilateral talks

Bangladesh-Cambodia bilateral talks were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation in Phnom Penh.

Foreign Minister Abdul Momen & Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn led the respective delegations.

Both Foreign Ministers discussed the significant aspects of the bilateral relations between their respective nations.

The two parties discussed areas of cooperation in trade, business, investment, agriculture, medicines, food security, human resources, information and communications technology, tourism, and cultural exchange.

They recognized that bilateral trade is much below its potential and that both parties are committed to taking measures to increase it.

They also urged finalizing the several MoUs under negotiation as soon as possible.


Signing of MoUs

In the presence of Momen and his Cambodian counterpart Prak Sokhonn, an MoU was signed between the Foreign Service Academy of Bangladesh and the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations of Cambodia.

At the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations, Dr. Momen gave a presentation entitled “Padma Bridge in Bangladesh: Opening New Opportunity for Connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia.”

In the presence of the province’s Governor and other senior officials, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Abdul Momen inaugurated a road named “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib St” in Phnom Phen.

The Foreign Minister finalized his visit after meeting with Bangladeshi ex-pats in Cambodia.

He asked them to offer their knowledge and experience to the country’s continued development and progress.
