Baltic States Secure Energy Independence with European Grid Integration

Vilnius (TDI)– Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have officially synchronized their electricity networks with the European power grid, marking a major step toward energy independence.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced the successful transition, emphasizing that the Baltic nations have severed their reliance on the Russian power system.

The integration, completed through Poland, has been in progress since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The Baltic states, all members of the European Union and NATO, prioritized the shift to reduce their vulnerability to potential Russian energy coercion.

Officials have long expressed concerns that Moscow could use electricity supplies as a tool for political pressure.

Nauseda hailed the move as a historic milestone, stating that it ends a period of external dependency and strengthens national security.

He was joined by Estonian and Latvian leaders, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Polish President Andrzej Duda. The project, funded largely by the EU, received €1.6 billion in investment.

With recent security concerns over undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, Nauseda called for stronger EU-wide measures to safeguard critical energy systems. Several incidents involving severed telecom and power cables have raised alarms over potential sabotage. European officials suspect Russia’s involvement, though Moscow denies such accusations.

The successful integration into the European grid marks a decisive shift in the Baltic region’s energy strategy, reinforcing its security and reducing its dependence on Russian resources.
