BAKU, (TDI): The COP29 Presidency hosted global climate leaders, government officials, and delegates at the Pre-COP meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, to address pressing environmental issues facing the planet.
Kicking off on October 10, this three-day event serves as a key platform for advancing climate negotiations ahead of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change next month.
Discussions at Pre-COP are centered on critical priorities for COP29, including climate finance, mitigation, adaptation, the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), and support for vulnerable communities, as highlighted by the organizers.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by COP29 president-designate Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stressed the importance of establishing an NCQG at COP29 that meets the needs of developing countries, small island nations, and the least developed states, while also representing a significant increase over previous targets.

Aliyev noted that achieving this goal requires global collaboration, emphasizing that neither Azerbaijan as COP29 Presidency nor any other nation can make decisions for others. Instead, their role is to provide a neutral platform to facilitate discussions, a responsibility they believe they have upheld effectively.
