Ankara, 11 March 2022 (TDI): Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Turkey. He arrived in Turkey at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On arrival, the Turkish Armed Forces gave a guard of honour to the Azerbiani guest at  Ankara’s Esenboga Airport.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez welcomed and received the Azerbijan President in Turkey.

Turkish and Azerbaijan President Meeting 

President Erdogan welcomed the Azerbaijani counterpart at Cankaya Presidental Palace.

Turkish President held the meeting with the Azerbaijani President at the palace. In the meeting, both presidents discussed the Ukraine situation, prospects for normalization in Azerbaijan-Armenia relations, and bilateral cooperation between the countries. Moreover, they exchanged views and agreed on further expansion of trade and economic relations.

Turkish President Erdogan and President Aliyev exchanged views on the events in Ukraine. Both praised efforts of Turkey and Azerbaijan to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Discussion on Gas Pipelines 

Likewise, they talked about energy cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Both discussed the operationalization of the Southern Gas Corridor. Southern Gas Corridor provides gas from the Caspian Sea to European countries via Turkey.

Besides, both heads of state also shared thoughts on the progress of the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline. Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline is between Turkey and Azerbaijan. It increases the energy security of the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan.

Shusha Declaration

Talking about the Shusha Declaration, both heads of state noted that it enhanced fraternal and friendly relations on the basis of alliance.

Likewise, Shusha Declaration talks about joining both countries’ armies against foreign threats. President Erdogan and President Ilham Aliyev signed the declaration in 2021 in Susha. Additionally, they also discussed the cooperation in the field of military, military training and education.

In the end, Azerbaijan President Erdogan and President Aliyev showed satisfaction with the development of allied relations between the two countries. In addition, Azerbaijan President invited Turkish President Erdogan to visit Azerbaijan.
