On 26 October 1955 the Austrian Parliament passed its constitutional law on permanent neutrality, following the end of foreign troop occupation and signifying Austria’s regained sovereignty.
After World War II, Austria was occupied by the four Allied powers (US, UK, France and the Soviet Union) and its capital Vienna was similarly divided. The landmark Austrian State Treaty signed on 15 May 1955 restored Austria’s sovereignty, and the last Allied troops departed on 25 October 1955.
On the next day, 26 October 1955, the parliament formally declared Austria’s permanent neutrality, an act which became the cornerstone of the country’s modern identity. The date was originally commemorated as “Flag Day” and from 1965 became its recognized National Day.
