Australia Warns Russia on Citizen Death in Ukraine

SYDNEY, (TDI): Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a stern warning to Moscow on Wednesday, stating that the country would take the “strongest action possible” if reports of an Australian citizen’s death in Ukraine are confirmed.

“We’re awaiting confirmation of the facts, but if any harm has come to Oscar Jenkins, it is absolutely reprehensible, and the Australian government will respond decisively,” Albanese told reporters.

The statement follows reports that Jenkins, 32, a Melbourne-born biology teacher and volunteer soldier fighting for Ukraine, was allegedly killed after being captured by Russian forces in the Donbas region.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong also weighed in, warning that the Russian ambassador in Canberra could face expulsion if the reports are verified.

“Let me be clear: all options are on the table,” Wong said during an interview with ABC Radio National.

Jenkins was reportedly arrested by Russian forces last month in Kramatorsk, according to a video posted on Russian social media.

In the footage, a man identifying himself as Jenkins stated he was a biology teacher who lived between Australia and Ukraine.

Local broadcaster Seven News reported on Tuesday, citing sources in Ukraine, that Jenkins is believed to have been killed after his capture on the frontlines.

In response, the Australian Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador to demand clarification on the reports and to reiterate expectations for compliance with international humanitarian law.

“The Russian Federation is obligated to treat all prisoners of war in accordance with international law,” the ministry stated, adding that consular support is being provided to Jenkins’ family.
