Buenos Aires, 19 August 2024 (TDI): Police in Argentina said they have arrested 7 individuals who they believe formed part of an organisation planning terrorist attacks in the western province of Mendoza.
Argentina’s Federal Police (PFA) said in a statement issued that the alleged terror group had sent anti-Jewish and anti-Christian expressions via chat messaging programmes.
“Based on anti-Jewish and anti-Christian expressions, they disseminated via messages on Telegram and WhatsApp planning terror attacks against the western community in Mendoza with content linked to terrorist groups such as Islamic State and the Taliban Emirate of Afghanistan,” said the PFA.
The raids led to the seizure of firearms, electronic devices and bladed weapons as well as “Salafist literature,” the statement added.
PFA Anti-Terrorist Investigation Unit’s members led the operation.
Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said in a post on X that “in 8 raids the PFA dismantled a dangerous group linked to a radical terrorist group.”
She said the organization had been “identified after threatening a journalist from the Jewish community.”
“We are going to get rid of all these criminals who wanted to sow fear in Argentines and they will pay,” said Bullrich.
The probe was started following a complaint by the DAIA Jewish community group, reported local media, which said the security forces had identified the alleged aggressor and found he was part of a wider group.
