Cairo, 5 April 2022 (TDI): On 2 April, the Foreign Affairs Ministers members of the Arab League; participated via video conference, in a coordination meeting of the Arab Contact Group at the ministerial level.

The topic of the meeting was the crisis in Ukraine; the reason was to prepare for the upcoming tour by the ministers to Moscow and Warsaw.

The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, traveled to Moscow on 4 April. That trip includes as well Warsaw, as part of a visit to the Arab Contact Group at the ministerial level, in the implementation of the outcomes of the Arab League Council.

The Arab Contact Group organized the journey to hold the necessary consultations and contacts with the concerned parties of the conflict. The aim is to contribute to finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Alongside the other Foreign Ministers Members of the Arab League, Sameh Shoukry then arrived in Moscow. The Secretary-General of the League and the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iraq and Jordan also made the trip to Moscow to participate in the consultations.

Furthermore, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov; received the participating Ministers to start the meeting. Lavrov greeted Shoukry and the other participants of the Group consultations; upon their arrival at the place designated for the meeting. When the meeting ended, the Ministers started the preparations for the joint press conference to present the results.

Moreover, during the press conference; the participating Ministers presented the most important contents of the consultation session between the Arab Contact Group and the Russian Foreign Minister.

ARAB LEAGUE BACKGROUND 

The Arab League or League of Arab States (LAS) is a regional organization of Arab states in the Middle East and North Africa, formed in Cairo on March 22, 1945. The States formally established the League following the adoption of the Alexandria Protocol in 1944.

The Member States established the League with the aim of developing the economy, resolving disputes, and coordinating political aims. The founding member states were Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Transjordan (now Jordan), Saudi Arabia, and Yemen

Furthermore, other states joined the League over the years. Those members are Libya (1953); Sudan (1956); Tunisia and Morocco (1958); Kuwait (1961); Algeria (1962); Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and also the United Arab Emirates (1971).

Moreover, the last additions were Mauritania (1973); Somalia (1974); the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO; 1976); Djibouti (1977); and also Comoros (1993). Right now, Each member has one vote on the League Council, but the decisions are only binding for the members that voted for them.
