Washington DC, 31 August 2022 (TDI): Ambassador of United States to UN, Linda Thomas- Greenfield met with Natalia Kanem, the Executive Director of United Nations Populations Fund(UNFPA).

The Ambassador, in a tweet, shared that the United States contributes to the UNFPA’s work to protect the health and reproductive rights of all women throughout the globe.

United States and UNFPA collaborations

In 1969, the United States played a pivotal role in the formation and launch of UNFPA. Since then, the United States Government has been an active member of UNFPA’s Executive Board.

The United States supports UNFPA’s efforts to eradicate preventable maternal mortality, unmet family planning needs, and harmful gender-based violence and behaviors.

Moreover, the US and UNFPA have long been the leading bilateral and multilateral providers of global family planning and reproductive health assistance.

The bilateral connection has remained strong throughout all U.S. administrations and continues now through the engagement of both organizations with Family Planning 2030, and the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition.

In 2021, the United States announced the first-ever National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality. It included explicit calls to support UNFPA as a means to advance the strategy’s 10 interconnected priorities.

Further, the strategy included eliminating gender-based violence; protecting, improving, and expanding access to health care, including sexual and reproductive health care.

The United States and UNFPA share numerous aims focusing on supporting the health, livelihoods, and dignity of women and girls throughout the world. In 2021, the United States donated $30.8 million to UNFPA’s core resources.

In addition, the United States has vigorously reinstated co-funding for UNFPA’s essential humanitarian and development operations. Moreover, the US made its first-ever contribution to the UNFPA Supplies Partnership in 2021.

It provided $5 million to UNFPA’s flagship program dedicated to delivering a choice of modern contraceptives and life-saving maternal health medicines to women.

UNFPA and US also contributed to helping adolescent girls who need access to family planning and safe delivery in countries affected by humanitarian emergencies.

This contribution was made in accordance with the country’s commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health globally.
